New phone? Factory reset? Or just the fear of losing a two-year game save? Backing up your apps and their data is one of those things everyone means to do and nobody does — until it’s too late. Here’s how to do it properly, in about fifteen minutes.
Start With Google’s Built-In Backup
Android already backs up a lot automatically — if you let it. Go to Settings > System > Backup (the exact path varies by phone) and make sure Backup by Google One is turned on. This covers:
- App data for apps that support it
- Call history, contacts, and device settings
- SMS messages
- Photos and videos (if Google Photos backup is on)
When you sign into a new phone with the same Google account, most of this restores automatically. It’s the foundation — make sure it’s on before anything else.
Game Progress: Check for Cloud Save First
Most modern mobile games save your progress to the cloud — but only if you’re logged in. Open your game’s settings and look for:
- Google Play Games sign-in — the most common cloud save for Android games
- Facebook or email account linking — many games use this instead
- A “cloud save” or “account” section in the game’s own settings
If your game shows you as logged in or linked, your progress is safe. If it says “Guest” or “Local save” — link an account right now, before you do anything else. Guest progress dies with the app.
Back Up Sideloaded Apps and Their APKs
Apps you installed from APK files won’t come back automatically on a new phone. For these:
- Use a free APK extractor app to save installable copies of your sideloaded apps to your storage.
- Copy those APK files (plus any important downloads) to Google Drive or a computer.
- On the new phone, reinstall them from your saved copies.
Note: this backs up the apps, not their data. For app data, check if the app has its own export/backup feature in its settings — many file managers, launchers, and note apps do.
Photos, Files, and Everything Else
- Photos/videos: Google Photos with backup enabled. Double-check it’s actually syncing — open the app and look for “Backup complete.”
- WhatsApp chats: WhatsApp has its own backup — Settings > Chats > Chat backup. Run one manually before switching phones.
- Files and documents: copy your Download folder and any important folders to cloud storage.
- Authenticator apps: export or transfer these before wiping anything — losing 2FA access is a nightmare.
The 15-Minute Backup Routine (Do This Monthly)
- Confirm Google One backup is on and recent.
- Open your top 3 games — verify each shows a linked account, not Guest.
- Run a manual WhatsApp chat backup.
- Open Google Photos — confirm “Backup complete.”
- Export APKs of sideloaded apps you care about.
Before a Factory Reset or New Phone
Run the routine above, then verify: log into your Google account on a browser and check that the backup exists; screenshot your game account screens showing you’re logged in. Paranoia here is cheap — data loss is expensive. Future you will be grateful.
