Losing your phone is bad. Losing your photos, contacts, and messages with it is worse. Here is how to back up everything on your Android phone so you never lose a thing.
1. Back Up with Your Google Account
Go to Settings > Google > Backup and turn on “Backup by Google One”. This saves your apps, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS messages to your Google account automatically.
2. Back Up Photos and Videos
Open the Google Photos app, tap your profile picture, and turn on Backup. Your photos and videos upload automatically. The free 15GB is shared with Gmail and Drive — check your usage in the Google One app.
3. Save Your WhatsApp Chats
Open WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat backup and tap “Back up”. Turn on automatic daily backups to Google Drive so no conversation is ever lost.
4. Back Up Files and Documents
Move important files into Google Drive, or plug your phone into a computer and copy the DCIM, Documents, and Download folders manually once a month.
5. Export Your Contacts
Even with Google sync on, export a safety copy: open the Contacts app > Organize > Export to file. Save the .vcf file in Google Drive.
6. Save Your Authenticator Codes
If you use Google Authenticator, transfer your accounts to the new phone BEFORE wiping the old one (Authenticator > Transfer accounts). Better yet, switch to an authenticator with cloud sync.
7. Note Down Your App Logins
Use a password manager like Bitwarden or Google Password Manager so every login survives the move. Check passwords.google.com to confirm yours are saved.
8. Test Your Backup
A backup you never tested is just hope. On a new or reset phone, sign in with the same Google account and confirm your photos, contacts, and WhatsApp chats restore correctly.
Do this once, keep automatic backup switched on, and switching phones becomes a 30-minute job instead of a disaster.
