How to Free Up Storage Space on Android (Without Deleting Your Photos)

Running out of storage? That “Storage almost full” warning blocks app updates, camera shots, and even messages. Here’s how to reclaim gigabytes without losing anything important.

1. See What’s Eating Your Space

Go to Settings > Storage. Android breaks it down by category: Apps, Photos & videos, Audio, and System. This tells you exactly where to strike first. On most phones, photos/videos and a handful of huge apps are the culprits.

2. Use Files by Google to Clean Junk

Install Files by Google (free, from the Play Store) if you don’t have it. Tap Clean and it will find junk files, duplicates, blurry photos, large forgotten files, and old memes and screenshots. One tap removes them safely. Most people recover 2–5 GB on the first run.

3. Back Up Photos, Then Remove Them From the Phone

Photos and videos are usually the biggest storage hog. Turn on Google Photos backup, wait until everything shows “Backed up,” then use the Free up space button in Google Photos — it deletes the local copies while keeping them safe in the cloud.

4. Offload WhatsApp Media

WhatsApp silently downloads every photo, video, and voice note you receive. Open WhatsApp, go to Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage, and you’ll see exactly how much space each chat uses. Delete large forwarded videos — you won’t miss them. Also change Media auto-download to “No media” or “Wi-Fi only” so it stops piling up.

5. Clear Telegram’s Cache

Telegram stores every file you’ve ever opened. In Telegram, go to Settings > Data and Storage > Storage Usage and tap Clear Cache. Your chats stay intact — only the downloaded copies are removed. This alone can free several gigabytes for heavy users.

6. Delete Downloaded Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube Content

Offline downloads are great for travel but easy to forget. Open each app and clear old downloads: Spotify (Settings > Storage), Netflix (My Netflix > Downloads), YouTube (Library > Downloads).

7. Uninstall Apps You Haven’t Opened in Months

Be honest: that game you played twice in January isn’t coming back. Go to Play Store > Manage apps & device > Manage, sort by Least used, and uninstall the dead weight. You can always reinstall later.

8. Move Files to an SD Card (If Your Phone Has a Slot)

If your phone supports microSD, go to Settings > Storage and move photos, videos, and documents to the card. A 128GB card costs very little and ends the storage struggle for good.

9. Clear Chrome’s Browsing Data

Chrome’s cache can balloon to over a gigabyte. Open Chrome, go to Settings > Privacy and security > Clear browsing data, select Cached images and files, and clear. Your bookmarks and passwords stay put.

10. Stop Auto-Downloading in Every App

Prevention beats cleanup. In your messaging and social apps, turn off automatic media downloads so the problem doesn’t return next month.
