How to Stop Pop-up Ads and Spam Notifications on Android

Two Different Problems (and Why It Matters)

“Ads on my phone!” usually means one of two completely different things — and the fix depends on which one you have. Pop-up ads appear over other apps or on your home screen, even when you’re not browsing. Spam notifications flood your notification shade with promotions, “clean your phone!” warnings, and clickbait. This guide kills both, step by step.

Part 1: Stop Pop-up Ads in Your Browser

If pop-ups only appear while you’re browsing, the browser is the problem — and the fix takes two minutes. In Chrome:

• Tap the three dots > Settings > Site settings > Pop-ups and redirects — make sure it’s blocked.
• Same menu > Intrusive ads — set to blocked. This stops the worst offenders: full-page ads, auto-playing video ads, and countdown interstitials.

• The recent-apps trick: The next time a pop-up appears, don’t close it. Open Recent Apps — the pop-up usually shows up as its own card with the culprit app’s name and icon at the top.
• Check “Display over other apps”: Go to Settings > Apps > Special app access > Display over other apps. Review the list ruthlessly — messengers and screen-dimming apps have legitimate reasons; a “photo editor” or “battery saver” does not. Revoke it from anything suspicious.
• Look for recently installed junk: Pop-ups almost always start right after installing a shady app — free games, “RAM cleaners”, wallpaper apps, and sketchy utility apps are the usual suspects. If the timing matches, uninstall first and ask questions later.
• Run Play Protect: Open Play Store > profile > Play Protect > Scan. It catches known adware, though brand-new junk sometimes slips through.

Part 3: Silence Spam Notifications for Good

Android gives you surgical control over notifications — most people just never use it:

• Long-press any annoying notification > tap the settings icon. You’ll land directly on that app’s notification settings, where you can disable the specific channel (e.g., “Promotions”) while keeping the useful ones (e.g., “Messages”).

• Use “Filter spam calls” if your phone offers it, so suspected spam goes straight to voicemail.
• For SMS spam, long-press the message in Google Messages > Block & report spam. Reporting helps the filters improve for everyone.
• Never tap links in spam texts or call back unknown numbers — engagement marks you as a live target.

When It’s Actually Malware: Warning Signs

Occasional ad spam is usually just a junky app. But escalate your response if you notice: pop-ups appearing even in Safe Mode, apps you didn’t install, battery draining far faster than usual, mobile data spiking, or your browser homepage changing on its own. Boot into Safe Mode (hold Power, then long-press “Power off” until the Safe Mode prompt appears) — third-party apps can’t run there. If the pop-ups stop in Safe Mode, it’s definitely an app: uninstall recent downloads one by one until it’s gone. If they continue even in Safe Mode, back up your data and do a factory reset.
